I was born in Montreal, Canada to deaf parents and have been signing since I was 8 months old. I am a nationally certified American Sign Language interpreter in the U.S and am now living in Holland.
When I first came here, I was surprised to find only a single baby signing program available — and that was a Dutch translation of an American baby sign program utilizing American Sign Language (ASL) instead of Dutch Sign Language (NGT). I think it is important to use the signs of the country because learning baby signs is also an opportunity for people to experience the deaf community and their language. The more exposure the hearing community has to the deaf community, the easier it will be for the deaf community to advance in our society.
I hope that through Babygebaren I will be able to share my knowledge of child development and sign language as well as bring the hearing and deaf community together.
